City replaces sewer pipe in Forest Road, Eerste River

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate is doing emergency point repair work to replace a 30m sewer main pipeline in Forest Road in Eerste River. This work is envisaged to take about four weeks to complete, however, this timeframe could change depending on site conditions and the extent of the work required.
The replacement of the 30m sewer main pipeline is expected to be completed by 30 September 2023 if all goes as planned. The repair work involves excavating approximately 3,5m deep and replacing the affected section of pipeline.
‘This emergency repair work is a proactive approach to maintain our sewer pipes so they can continue to service properties in this area. This work is necessary as the existing pipeline infrastructure has generally reached its lifespan, resulting in sections of pipes collapsing in Forest Drive and Stratford Avenue in Eerste River,’ said Councillor Zahid Badroodien, Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation.
Effects on traffic
The section of road between Kleinvlei and Springbok Roads where work will take place will be cordoned off but motorists in the area will still be able to use this road. Traffic flow will be monitored. An access road is currently being used by heavy vehicles.
‘We appreciate residents’ understanding during this time while this necessary work is done to invest in City infrastructure to ensure continued service delivery,’ said Councillor Badroodien.
A Permanent solution for the recurring sewer collapses in Forest Drive and Stratford Avenue
‘A permanent solution is a Cured-in-Place-Pipe Lining (CIPP) method that uses trenchless technology that involves working from manhole to manhole with minimum excavation if required. Careful consideration has been given to when the work will be done. As a result, this work will be done at night with the advantage of minimum traffic flow and disruption to the public and the surrounding area,’ said Councillor Badroodien.
Upcoming CIPP sewer pipe replacements in the area:
- The Forest Drive CIPP project construction will start on 14 October 2023 and should be completed towards the end of January 2024 if all goes to plan.
- The Stratford Avenue CIPP project will start on 23 October 2023 and should be completed towards the end of February 2024 if all goes to plan.
